“adventure on the angel flame”

The crew of the Angel Flame received orders to head out. The mini barge, lovingly nicknamed after the excursion’s prize goal, picked up speed and cruised away from the New Jersey shore. Matt McDaniels clung at the railing, eyes fixed upon the undisturbed waters. His crewmate, Mechanic Jack, checked the hatch one last time and beckoned his friend inside.

“There’ll be plenty of time for worrying later,” Mechanic Jack offered. “We’ve got a strategy session right now.”

Matt nodded, inhaling once before following his friend belowdeck. “I don’t think we’ll be seeing much more of these calm waters.”

“‘course not,” Jack laughed dryly. He glanced at Matt, who grinned back at him.

Midst the waves, through sharktooth gates, there you’ll find the Angel Flame,” the two recited at each other and clasped hands, as they had done many a time as boys.

“Our dreams are finally being realized, buddy,” Jack said. “Let’s go find that darned thing.”

146 words not counting the given sentence. This was for “Monday’s Finish the Story“. Not sure if I’ll be doing these every week, but it was a nice challenge. PSA: I have absolutely no knowledge of nautical… stuff. So yeah.

[EDIT] Corresponding short story here: “our last winter
